From Leonardo da Vinci’s marble cutting frame to the present day: the Prussiani marble processing machines

There is a very long and articulated tradition in marble processing in Italy and Prussiani’s marble machines are certainly the result of the highest innovation and technology of the evolution of this sector.

Ars marmoris was the guild of workers who organized the quarries from the mid-15th century: they dealt with the excavation of stone material as well as the processing of marble and finally also its trade. Over time, these tasks have been divided and entrusted to various specialization departments, such as sawmills, laboratories and artisan shops, which have allowed the development of the sector.

In the twentieth century the number of workshops decreased more and more, but on the contrary the number of workers employed in each of them increased more. Modern machinery was introduced and the workshops took on an increasingly industrial aspect.

From manual cutting to marble machinery

Although there have been studies and attempts to build machinery for cutting and processing marble, such as the frame for sawing marble designed by Leonardo da Vinci in the 1500s, manual work prevails until the 1800s.

The marble was manually cut in the sawmills and reduced into slabs of various thicknesses. Over time, machinery for marble was introduced such as:

  • diamond disc block cutter
  • multi-thread looms
  • multi-blade frames

Then we develop machinery for the roughing of marble blocks, machinery for polishing and cutters that allow the rough slabs to be cut into smaller elements of predetermined dimensions that will be destined for the most varied uses.

Prussian marble machines

These last machines are the direct ancestors of Prussiani’s high-tech machines which, with the years of experience in the sector, have managed to achieve an unparalleled range of marble machinery.

These are very precise, efficient and customizable marble processing machines. They meet all customer needs and offer great production results.

Let’s see them here in detail:

  1. Bridge saws – machines for cutting marble slabs, can have 4 or 5 interpolated axes and are suitable for straight cuts and profiling or for more complex processes such as curved and inclined cuts, drilling and profiling.
  2. Milling machines – machinery for processing marble and for the production of one-off and series pieces such as cornices, arches, profiles, handrails, tables, sinks, bathtubs and shower trays. They also allow you to engrave letters and profile blocks.
  3. CNC – i centri di lavoro Prussiani sono progettati e costruiti per la lavorazione del marmo. They are managed by a numerical control interfaced with CAD / CAM systems, they allow various processes such as contouring, profiling, drilling, milling, polishing, engraving and bas-relief.
  4. Plate polishers – are designed and built for processing the surfaces of marble slabs. Managed by a numerical control interfaced with CAD / CAM systems, they are equipped with an automatic tool change that allows you to calibrate, polish, smooth, brush and engrave the surfaces of the slabs.
  5. Lathes – marble processing machines that are capable of making circular, square, polygonal, oval and helical section columns. They can also produce balustrades, vases, complex capitals, statues and various design elements.
  6. Waterjet – Prussiani waterjet machines are designed and built to cut marble. Managed by a numerical control interfaced with CAD / CAM systems and by the dedicated WJ CAM program, they allow to obtain precise straight, inclined and shaped cuts without thermal deformations.
  7. Machines for sink holes – are numerically controlled machines with high productions designed for optimal cutting and polishing of kitchen sinks and bathroom sink holes in marble materials.
  8. CUT&JET – machines designed for the infinite variations of marble cuts. Equipped with an electro-spindle for diamond disc and water jet, they are designed and built to combine the speed of the disc, the versatility of the water jet and the efficiency of the CUT & MOVE system.
